Some significant copyrights expire in 2021. Notably, in January, Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the classic jazz age novel will no longer be protected.
𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥
From January 2021, anyone will have the right to use the characters of Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan or narrator Nick Carraway as they chose. Look out for a prequel novel, a sequel or a Gatsby opera on Broadway or in the London’s theatre land.

Gatsby wrote of an age of wealth and excess that followed the deprivations of the First World War and the Spanish flu pandemic. Commentators have been quick to realise that when Covid vaccines finally provide a safety net, the world may embark on another round of partying. Possible parallels between a novel published in 1925 chronicling the freedoms of the early 1920s and post Covid life in the 2020s may inspire many writers.

As well as The Great Gatsby, copyright expires on the Tarzan story in 2021 too. Looking ahead, Hemingway’s The sun also rises is out of copyright in 2022 and from 2024 Disney will no longer have exclusive control over Mickey Mouse’s adventures.
